Short Story
All I’ve ever wanted is real friends. Right now my “friends” are really mean to everybody but the 12 girls in our group. In fourth grade, I ditched my best friend Lucy to sit with the popular girls, they told me if I left Lucy for good I could become “one of them,” and what 10 year old doesn’t want to be popular? Now I’m an 11th grader and all I’ve done since I ditched Lucy is go shopping and see every One Direction concert that comes to Minnesota. I miss having Friday night sleepovers and pizza parties with Lucy, I would give anything to go back to those days. According to Sienna, the most popular girl of all of us, we don’t do sleepovers, going to each other’s houses, or eat anything other than salad. I’m so tired of it, but if I did try to leave Sienna would make sure my life until college would be miserable.
That night after a long time of thinking I dug through my drawer full of yearbooks and phonebooks to find Lucy’s number. I opened up my 10th grade yearbook and found that Lucy did soccer, drama club, and tennis, I haven’t joined any clubs or played any sports since 4th grade. I dialed Lucy’s number with high hopes but after seven rings it went to voicemail,
“Hey it’s Lucy!” the recording said in a cheery voice “I can’t get to your call right now, I’ll call you back as soon as possible, bye.”
I didn’t leave a message because I knew she wouldn’t call me back, so I went to bed.
At 10:42 pm that night I woke up to my phone dinging.
“Hey Sam.” Lucy texted me. I smiled at the name Sam, she used to call me that when I hated the name Samantha. I took a deep breath.
“Look, I know I’m really late on this apology, but I’m so sorry about 4th grade. Sienna was never as good a friend as you, actually she never even was my friend. I missed you so much Lucy, can you ever forgive me?”
“Of course, that’s what friends are for :)”
I didn’t care what Sienna and her friends would do to me anymore. I had my best friend back.
